Why don’t cobots collaborate? Challenges & Opportunities in Human-Robot Collaboration

Despite the fact that they are designed to specifically work alongside humans, it is still most common for cobots to be utilised in a similar fashion to industrial robots, i.e. not interacting and totally separated from humans on the factory floor.

In this engaging seminar, our Chief Investigator, Dr Marc Carmichael from University of Technology Sydney, talked about some of the engineering centred challenges that need to be overcome to enable higher levels of cobot collaboration. Discussion included:

* How can we create easily programmable cobots that don’t require traditional coding, for example learning via demonstration.
* Why traditional techniques for robot control aren’t always the best approach for physical human-robot interaction.
* How can cobots understand the intention of their human collaborators?
