Seminar Series: An XR Human-Robot Interaction Framework for Field Robot Teleoperation

Join Tony Lee for an engaging seminar presenting research on enhancing field robot teleoperation through an Extended Reality (XR) Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) framework designed to improve usability, effectiveness, and safety in hazardous environments. The work investigates whether the experience of interacting with a co-located cobot can be meaningfully replicated in remote teleoperation. To achieve this, an optimised point cloud streaming and rendering pipeline was developed for immersive, real-time digital twin generation, coupled with a natural action control scheme and affordance-based feedback to support operators’ proprioceptive abilities. Validated through both lab studies and real-world deployment in a mining application, the system significantly improves task performance and safety, particularly for non-expert users in high-risk scenarios.
