Reflections from the 2023 OZCHI workshop on Empowering People in Human-Robot Collaboration

At the OzCHI 2023 conference, a collaborative effort between researchers from the Australian Cobotics Centre (QUT and UTS) and CINTEL (CSIRO) resulted in a workshop titled “Empowering People in Human-Robot Collaboration: Why, How, When, and for Whom.” Building upon the success of the previous year’s workshop, held at OzCHI 2022, this gathering highlighted the burgeoning interest in human-robot collaboration within the Oceania region. Discussions at the 2022 workshop encompassed various aspects, including human roles in collaboration, empathy for robots, design approaches, evaluation methodologies, and ethical considerations. The 2023 workshop aimed to delve deeper by examining underlying research assumptions and charting pathways toward shared visions for future exploration.

This article provides a glimpse into two emergent topics: “Robots as Tools for Creativity” and “Assumptions About Robots,” offering insights and examples from workshop discussions. Through exploring these themes, the article aims to inspire reflection and engagement among those interested in the multifaceted dynamics of empowering people in human-robot collaboration.
